It is long-acting but can be easily removed if you decide you want to become pregnant or use alternative contraception. The non-hormonal coil, also known as the IUD (intrauterine device) or ‘copper coil’, is a small T-shaped device that sits in your womb. A contraceptive coil, also known as an intrauterine device (IUD), is a form of birth control for women that can last anywhere from five to 10 years. It is a good alternative for women who can’t take the hormones oestrogen or progestogen. Because it is non-hormonal, a woman could hypothetically get pregnant the very day it is removed. The IUD does not protect you from STIs. If there is a suspected perforation, go to A&E to see a specialist. Share your story, ask others or tag @Dr_Paula on our How quickly does the IUD work after it’s fitted? What if I become pregnant while I have a IUD? This is not common. The clinician will then use forceps to hold the cervix steady in order to determine the size and position of your womb with a sterile probe. If you can't feel the threads or if you think the IUD has moved, you may not be fully protected against pregnancy. Hormonal-based IUDs have varying lifespans, depending on the brand. Copper coil experiences please (non hormonal) A place to discuss contraception and sexual health with other Netmums. Before I get into it, I know I asked you guys what kind of personal posts you wanted to see and this 100% wasn’t requested by anyone.Possibly because I’m not in the habit of doing personal posts (yet) so most people aren’t aware of my choice in contraceptive but this has honestly changed my life. This is called a post-partum IUD fitting. Having a coil fitted can be uncomfortable and painful but the pain shouldn't last long and is described as quite similar to period pains. This may cause pain but often there are no symptoms. Yes, whilst using the IUD you can use tampons, pads or a mooncup. Then they will pull the plastic tube out, leaving the coil in place allowing the arms of the coil to fold open. It may not be suitable for women who have: May get cramps and spotting/bleeding for a few days after fitting. Another benefit of the copper coil is its suitability for use during breastfeeding, but these women will have to wait four weeks after giving birth for the coil to be fitted.2 The benefits of the copper coil also lie in the long-acting effects (5 to 10 years), meaning there is no requirement to remember to take a pill once daily. Photo diagnosis for lumps, bumps and warts, Lasts for 5-10 years depending on the type, Your fertility returns to normal as soon as the IUD is taken out. The IUD works by stopping the sperm and egg from surviving in the womb or fallopian tubes. It may also prevent a fertilised egg from implanting in the womb. It is unlikely that the IUD would move, but the GP or clinician that fits your IUD will teach you how to feel for the threads and check that the IUD is still in place. Once in place you don’t need to worry about getting pregnant for five to 10 years, depending on the type used. If they can feel the threads, get your GP or clinician to check your IUD is in place. The IUD works by stopping the sperm and egg from surviving in the womb or fallopian tubes. If you're considering changing the type of contraception you use and want to ask others about their experiences with the copper coil, Nexplanon, Mirena or the pill, post here. It's sometimes called a "coil" or "copper coil". There is a very rare risk that an IUD might make a tiny hole in the womb or neck of the womb (cervix) when put in. We will try to fit your coil on your first appointment but this may not always be possible. You will be taught how to feel for the threads and check the IUD is still in place. They will decide if a hormone coil (Mirena) or a copper coil (IUD) will be best for you. The coil is the most effective form of emergency contraception and can be used even if you have been unprotected a number of times. A more effective form of emergency contraception than the morning after pill, the copper coil can also be placed up to five days after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. IUDs are split into two categories: hormonal and non-hormonal. They will decide if a hormone coil (Mirena) or a copper coil (IUD) will be best for you. The IUD contains copper and should not be used by those who are allergic to copper. Some people prefer to have no plans after their appointment so that they can be relax at be comfortable at home afterwards.
