The temperature of the material at the time it is offered for transport and during transportation may not exceed 55 C (130 F). The rechargeable (and some non-rechargeable) types have gelled alkaline electrolytes (rather than acidic) making it difficult for them to generate hydrogen or oxygen when overcharged and therefore, differentiating them from non-spillable batteries. If a vehicle is powered by a flammable liquid and a flammable gas internal combustion engine, it must be described using Vehicle, flammable gas powered. This includes hybrid electric vehicles powered by both an internal combustion engine and wet, sodium or lithium batteries installed. After unloading, the residual material also must be covered with an inert gas or the container must be filled with water to the tank's capacity. B18 Open steel hoppers or bins are authorized. When column 7 of the Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR 172.101) includes a special provision code for an entry in the table, the requirement of that code - or codes, there may be several of them - is in addition to the general packaging requirements of 173.24 and any other applicable packaging requirements in Part 173.
