Cuban Jewish Community: National Pre-Taglit Seminar 2010

It was with great enthusiasm that the Youth Organization Macabi Cuba ended its National Pre Taglit – March for the Living Seminar 2010, on its Second edition, held in an open space in Canasi, a little town at the seashore between Havana and Matanzas. Fully developed by the Tzevet of Madrichim together with local leaders from the Patronato of the Cuban Jewish Community, it was an opportunity for our youngsters to get together for developing educational activities about Judaism, Holocaust (Shoa), Modern History of the Jewish State, besides History of the Cuban Jewish Community, among others. One of the highlights of the event was the Shabbat service and Havdalah conducted by young members from the Jewish congregations in Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Sancti Spiritus,Cienfuegos and Havana. More than 36 young members of the Macabi Cuba Youth Organization, representing 8 Jewish congregations all over the Island, attended this Seminar, most of them candidates to attend March for the Living, Taglit – Birthright Israel, MASA and Yaldeinu’s Madrichim exchange program in Canada.

Among the special guests we had a representation from Adath Israel board and the JDC representative in Cuba. This very important event was possible thanks to the sponsorship of Northwestern Hillel and the Patronato of the Cuban Jewish Community.

Since 1992 the Cuban Jewish Community has focused on gathering and bringing back the remaining Jewish population of Cuba that had drifted away from their religious roots during the previous 32 years. It was not until August 2003, that for the first time in the history 10 young people from the Cuban Jewish Community landed to Eretz Israel attended the Taglit – Birthright Israel program, a new era for the relationships between the State of Israel and the Cuban Jewish Community. Later on, April, 2006,

March for the Living was also established for Cuba. Up to date, it has been possible for more than 70 Jewish youngsters from Cuba to attend both:

Taglit – Birthright Israel and March for the Living, thanks to the support of

Canada Israel Experience from the United Israel Appeal Federations Canada.

By supporting either an Educational seminar for our Youth Organization Macabi Cuba or a local young Jewish student to attend Taglit – Birthright Israel, March for the Living or MASA program, you will be helping us to keep Judaism alive in Cuba through our new generation.
