On Saturday, May 17, 2003, The Maimonides
Lodge of B'nai B'rith, located in Havana, reached its 60th Anniversarry
with great excitement and pride in its achievements. Several Americans
joined the celebration and enjoyed both the program on Saturday afternoon
and the excursion on Sunday. The Lodge prepared a 15 page history summary
of the activities of the Maimonides Lodge and gave each of us who do not
speak Spanish a translation of the speech by president Isaac Rousso. Mr.
Mitrani was honored as the last living participant of the group of Cuban
Jews who volunteered in Israel during the War for independence in 1947.
Dr. Jose Altshuler was honored for his achievements in science, the
history of science, his numerous academic and administrative activities at
the university, and participation in the Revolution of 1959 , including
the reorganization of the Dept. of Communications and the developmant of a
new curriculum for the University. He was also involved in Cuba's
successful space research program. Three American guests, Stanley Cohen of
The Cuban Relief Committee of B'nai B'rith, Stanley Falkenstein of the
Jewish-Cuban Connection, and June Safran of The Cuba-America Jewish
Mission and representing The Golden Pacific Region of B'nai B'rith were
honored guests.
President, Isaac Rousso, welcomed guests
both Cuban's and Americans and presented certificates of appreciation to
past presidents, Mr. Mitrani, Dr. Altshuler, and the three American
guests. His speech summarizing the history of the Lodge and outlining
current activities and future plans is below. Stanley Falkenstein
presented a certificate of achievement from B'nai B'rith International. A
musical program of classical guitar and clarinet followed.
The next day, there was an excursion to a
large park outside of Havana, Escambray de Jaruka, where the membership
and guests enjoyed the view, the food, and good company.
It is clear that the Maimonides Lodge is a
healthy and fast growing organization that fulfills the mission of B'nai
B'rith. Those of us associated with it are proud and grateful for the
opportunity to work with its members.
